A Bellingham chef is officially in the running for one of the culinary world's highest honors.

Jordan Koplowitz, the chef and co-owner of downtown's Starla’s, has been named a semifinalist for a 2026 James Beard Award.

The prestigious awards are often called the Oscars of the food world, marking a monumental achievement.

Koplowitz is one of only 20 chefs recognized in the Best Chef: Northwest and Pacific category.

Notably, he is the only nominee from Washington state located outside of the Seattle area, placing the Bellingham food scene firmly on the national map.

Starla’s, known for its natural wines and sourdough pizzas, has been a local favorite since opening in 2024.

This is the first time a Whatcom County chef has received this recognition in over a decade, highlighting incredible local growth.

Finalists will be announced on March 31.

Lynden True Value Set to Close as CHS Northwest Shifts Strategy
🔥 Trending

A significant change is coming to Lynden’s retail landscape, as the longtime Lynden True Value hardware store is being sold.

Its parent company, CHS Northwest, announced the decision to sell the location at 119 17th Street as part of a strategic shift away from its retail-focused operations.

This move has created uncertainty for the store’s loyal customers and dedicated employees in the heart of Whatcom County.

The sale is expected to result in the layoff of approximately 11 workers, with changes effective around April 1st.

For years, the store has served as a crucial hub for local farmers and residents.

CHS Northwest has stated it is actively seeking a new owner with a strong retail focus, aiming to keep the essential business open rather than closing it permanently. The future of the community fixture now rests on finding the right buyer.
